The vast majority of residents are African-American. Despite its position as a port city, Baltimore has failed to attract a substantial number of immigrants. While the United States has seen dramatic increases in immigration from Asia and Latin America, Baltimore still has a negligible population of residents from those areas. Even as a Black majority city, Baltimore has few immigrants from the West Indies or Africa. The city still has a large population of ethnic whites, with German-Americans and Irish-Americans making up the largest European groups.
